Abstract: Peer Neubert is Professor of Robot Vision and head of the Intelligent Autonomous Systems research group at the Institute of Computer Graphics at the University of Koblenz. The group's research focuses on algorithms and systems for processing and interpreting sensor data. A particular emphasis is placed on combining machine learning with prior knowledge and expert knowledge. The psychologist Abraham Maslow once wrote, “ I suppose it is tempting, if the only tool you have is a hammer, to treat everything as if it were a nail.” This presentation will use examples from the research group's work to demonstrate how various tools, such as probabilistic methods and algorithm design, machine learning, and (vector-)symbolic AI approaches, can be combined to solve challenging problems. Example applications will include camera-based localization of mobile robots in challenging and changing environments, as well as a current application scenario for accident scene reconstruction in cooperation with the Koblenz Police Headquarters. One example method will be the use of thousand-dimensional spaces for localization in our three-dimensional space.
